What's happening
Draft is the upward pull that pulls air through the fire and carries exhaust up and out. When it's weak, fires are sluggish, smoky, and hard to keep going, and you may smell exhaust in the room. Draft depends on flue size, chimney height, temperature, and whether the flue is clear — and any of those can be off.

What causes it
Wrong flue size
An oversized flue can't build velocity; an undersized one can't move enough air.
Insufficient height
A chimney that's too short, or shadowed by a roofline or trees, drafts poorly.
Cold exterior flue
Cold air in an outside chimney sits like a plug until the flue warms.
Blockage or buildup
Creosote, debris, or nests restrict the airway.
Why it matters
Poor draft means incomplete combustion — more creosote (a fire hazard), more smoke, and combustion byproducts lingering indoors. It also makes a wood or gas appliance burn inefficiently.
