Poor Chimney Draft

A weak draft makes fires hard to start, smoky, and inefficient. Good draft is physics — and it can be restored.

What's happening

Draft is the upward pull that pulls air through the fire and carries exhaust up and out. When it's weak, fires are sluggish, smoky, and hard to keep going, and you may smell exhaust in the room. Draft depends on flue size, chimney height, temperature, and whether the flue is clear — and any of those can be off.

The short version: diagnose the real cause first — then fix that, not a guess. We start every job with an inspection.

What causes it

Wrong flue size

An oversized flue can't build velocity; an undersized one can't move enough air.

Insufficient height

A chimney that's too short, or shadowed by a roofline or trees, drafts poorly.

Cold exterior flue

Cold air in an outside chimney sits like a plug until the flue warms.

Blockage or buildup

Creosote, debris, or nests restrict the airway.

Why it matters

Poor draft means incomplete combustion — more creosote (a fire hazard), more smoke, and combustion byproducts lingering indoors. It also makes a wood or gas appliance burn inefficiently.

How we fix it

We measure and diagnose the draft, then correct it — clearing the flue with a sweep, installing a properly sized stainless liner, or addressing height/cap issues. A Level 2 inspection finds the real cause.

Poor Chimney Draft — frequently asked questions

How do I know if I have a draft problem?

Hard-to-start fires, smoke entering the room, a fire that won't stay lit, or a strong exhaust smell all point to weak draft.

Can a liner fix a draft problem?

Often, yes — a correctly sized stainless liner restores the velocity an oversized or deteriorated flue lost.

Does chimney height affect draft?

Yes. Too-short chimneys and ones shadowed by a taller roofline or trees draft poorly; sometimes the fix is adding height.
