The challenge

A recurring ceiling stain near the chimney chase pointed to the roof line. The original flashing had been face-nailed and caulked rather than stepped and counter-flashed into the mortar — every hard rain found its way behind it.

The result

We stripped the old flashing, cut fresh reglets into the mortar joints, installed woven step flashing with counter-flashing set into the masonry, and sealed it. We water-tested before leaving; the stain hasn't returned.
