The challenge

This Hingham home sits close enough to the harbor that salt air had accelerated the mortar breakdown well past inland norms. Joints were raked out a half-inch deep, and several face bricks had spalled.

The result

We ground out the failed joints, repointed with color-matched type-N mortar tooled to the original profile, replaced spalled brick with salvaged matches, and finished with a breathable coastal water repellent.
