A chase cover is the metal top that seals a framed or prefab chimney chase — the equivalent of a masonry crown on a brick chimney. When the original galvanized cover rusts through, water pours into the chase. We fabricate and install custom stainless steel or copper covers that won't rust and are sloped to shed water.
Many newer Quincy and South Shore homes have framed chimney chases — a wood-framed, sided structure housing a factory-built (prefab) fireplace and flue — rather than solid masonry. The chase is topped by a metal chase cover. Builders often use thin galvanized steel that rusts within a decade, and the tell-tale rust streaks running down the siding are usually the first sign it's failing.
A rusted or flat chase cover lets water sit and seep into the chase, soaking framing and the prefab firebox below. We measure and fabricate a custom cover in marine-grade stainless steel or copper, sloped and cross-broken to drain, with proper flue collars and a drip edge so water runs off instead of pooling.
Replacing the chase cover is a targeted, cost-effective fix that protects the much more expensive structure underneath. We pair it with a new cap or spark screen where needed, seal the penetrations correctly, and document the work.
